Do you have newborn photography studio envy? Do you ooo and aahh over other photographer’s beautiful expansive spaces and dream of the same so you can create the ‘same images’? I’m here to let you in on a little secret…!! You don’t need a fancy studio space to get started in newborn photography. In fact, you will NEVER ‘need’ a space like that. A few basics are needed to get started and that’s it! I wanted to share the space I created when the pandemic started and I needed to pivot from having an in-home newborn photography studio to a space that I could keep completely separated from the rest of the house.

Enter the GARAGE!! This was a perfect space that I was able to clear (ie move the stuff to our crawl space) and create a simple newborn photography studio set up that sufficed to have clients in an area that didn’t collide with our family.

Here’s the space before and after!!

Clear a space or move some items to one side and simplify your newborn studio area. It doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to be clean and cleared! I removed everything so I could start from scratch, gave it a good scrub, and then layered my very simple setup back in so that cleaning was easy and the space provided me with everything I needed.

Here’s a checklist that you can go through:

Comfortable Seating For Parents

Provide comfortable seating for parents within your studio space. Make sure it can be easily cleaned from client to client.

Light Stand

I recommend a Mathews reverse stand so that light can be adjusted to the floor.

Backdrop Stand

Your backdrop stand must be able to support the weight of your seamless paper roll. We recommend a Manfrotto Stand or Impact Pro Backdrop Kit for your newborn photography studio.

Seamless Paper Roll

This will act as your simple backdrop for family newborn photos. Choose our favourite ‘white’ Savage colour.

Floor Boards

You can use vinyl flooring or sheeting for floor boards for your newborn studio space. These will provide some simple contrast to your newborn photography props.

Non-Slip Rubber Rug Padding

Place non-slip rubber rug padding underneath your floor boards to keep them in place.

Set of Clamps

Have a set of clamps handy to keep props and wardrobe in place when photographing your newborn sessions.

Let me know if you have any questions about setting up your simple studio space and then go for it!!
