With every newborn baby session you want to take a little extra time to change off your portrait lens so you can shoot some newborn macro images for your client’s gallery. In this post we’ll discuss the best macro lens for newborn photography and why it’s so important to include macro images in your newborn sessions.

What lens is good for newborn photography?

When switching from my portrait lens (Canon 24-70mm) for my macro lens, I recommend the Canon 100mm lens. With this lens, you can get up close to capture all of those itty bitty eyelashes, lips, fingernails & feathery soft hair of each of your newborn baby clients.

To me, it’s those gorgeous little details that make each baby so unique and special-the way their sweet little toes curl, the way they favour a hand by their face, the length of their eyelashes, the swirl of their hair. A little upturned nose or rosebud lips. Each baby is so different and these are the teeny soft details that all mamas want to remember. As babies grow and change, these tiny details change so quickly and our captures in those first couple of weeks will provide a lifetime of memories.
