Newborn photography wrapping has become an art form in the industry! However, when you are wrapping for digitals (and when you are just starting out in newborn photography) it is best to keep to a few simple wraps. A neat and simple wrap will not detract from the star of your photograph – baby!!! Read below for my tips for beginner newborn photography wrapping.

5 Tips for Newborn Photography Wrapping for Digital Backdrops

1. Practice Newborn Photography Wrapping Ahead of Time

If you don’t have a lot of practice with newborn photography wrapping, then I suggest practicing on a doll first! This will help you get to know where to place the wrap and baby to begin and where to place the fabric as you go. You will gain confidence by practicing ahead of your session and help with your subsequent newborn nigital backdrop composites!

2. Decide if you want hands and feet to show

Choose whether you want baby’s hands and feet to show in your image or be tucked in ahead of time. That way you can position baby’s arms and legs comfortably towards their chest when beginning your wrap.

3. Experiment with different wraps

Experiment with different lengths and textures of material. I choose fabrics that have lots of interesting texture and are stretchy; stretch knits, jersey knits, mohair knits & cheesecloth (with stretch) work well. It is easiest if the wrap has stretch both ways. If you are just wrapping a cocoon around baby and allowing the hands and feet to show then a shorter size is fine but if you are looking to fully wrap baby a 12″ x 60″ wrap is the best sizing for this.

4. Keep the wrap neat and tidy

Try to keep your wrap neat and tidy. Keep wraps close to baby’s body. It’s wonderful to have a flowing wrap for some of your posed newborn photography but when wrapping for digitals keep the wrap closely tucked into baby’s body so that you are not having to clone out the flowing wrap later in your composite.

5. Keep your newborn photography wrapping simple

Simple wraps are best. A neat and simple wrap will not detract from the star of your photograph – baby!!!
