HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH NEWBORN TWINS
Posing two or more babies together can often be very tricky! Getting one baby to sleep can be tricky but getting two babies to relax and sleep at the same time & position them both together can seem daunting. A beautiful image of twins is a task well worth undertaking; these little ones often have a unique and greater bond than other siblings, and pictures of that bond, even when they’re little, will be so treasured!
How soon after birth do you photograph newborn twins?
When booking, ensure that twins are close to their gestational corrected age. If they are born prematurely, I suggest waiting until at least corrected 38weeks or later when photographing. Many twins are born early and can be so little, needing time to gain strength and grow. Let mom and dad know about this before they book their session so that they can plan accordingly.
How do you pose and photograph newborn twins?
Make sure to capture each baby individually as you would in any other newborn session, capture their little details: toes, hands, profile and close ups.
Keeping babies wrapped will often help them stay settled and then a blanket over them both will help define that connection (and not disturb them sleeping).
Also remember to keep an eye on your lighting – what may look good on one might not look good on the other! Try and stick with even lighting across both twins, and be careful to avoid harsh shadows!
Another important thing to remember with twins is that each will have their own unique relationship with mom and dad, so make sure to capture that! Individual photos of each twin with each parent are a great way to show the individuality of each twin, and will make some beautiful pictures, especially when they are printed side by side. Remember that these photos will most likely be used by the twins themselves when they grow up, and they will appreciate the individual photos of themselves! A twin gallery will often be much larger than an individual baby’s gallery.
I recommend shooting with an aperture of 4 and keeping them both in the same plane of focus. Try and get the babies to have connection points as well, where they touch hands or feet. A sweet arm around the other’s shoulder or joining hand to cheek.
Relax and enjoy capturing this special bond and make sure to go with the flow. If they are wakeful, then capture that too!
